DARK SPACE light work
a group exhibition M16 Canberra
16-27th September 2009
Dark Space light work, a group exhibition exploring illumination as medium within an unlit gallery space. The works included in this exhibition explore illumination as medium through the use of new media, reflectivity and electricity. The artists address the idea of a dark space via the generation of an active element that is both integral and luminous, video is presented alongside objects, glass, drawings and installation.Sound is also present in the works of Blaide Lallemand and Denise Higgins, where conversations and whispered words shed light upon the hidden meaning of the works. Reflection is alluded to in the hydrous video work of Lucy Quinn and Denise Higgins and the elusive drawings of Genevieve Swifte. Swifte’s collaboration with astronomer Dr Patrick Tisserand captures variations of light and movement from the night sky in an installation of animated and raw observational images. Through the use of the familiar light bulb, electricity is most obviously and intimately present in the sculptural work of Bettina Hill and Cinnamon Lee, who has developed a sustainable light that evokes the warmth and nostalgia of the almost obsolete tungstenbulb.
In this show there are three works that consider aspects of the dark from whence we emerge, the dark spaces of whispers and the darkness of prejudice of the ‘other’.
gaze is a concave black mirror that invites us to consider how we respond to the enigma of otherness. It is an encounter in which the viewer is held in the reflective space of other, a space in which the image of self is inverted, unstable. The metal collar refers to the neck chains used to round up ‘blacks’ off country.
